ESR ~> EL SERENO RIFA Name of the old community on the East Side tucked in-between Alhambra and Lincoln Heights, running along both sides of Eastern Avenue. RH ~> ROSE HILLS Name of the old community tucked in-between Montecito Heights and El Sereno, north west of Huntington Drive. The Rose Hills Courts are the projects in their neighborhood. HVR ~> HAPPY VALLEY Name of the old little valley community north of Broadway along Lincoln Park Avenue and Sierra Street leading to Montecito Heights. ES18ST ~> EAST SIDE EIGHTEEN STREET A branch of the original Varrio 18 Street from the Pico Union/Westlake area. ES18ST is tucked in-between Rose Hills and El Sereno, centered along Huntington Drive. LOCKE STREET Name of the Avenue in the Monterey Hills neighborhood, north of El Sereno. LSL / L12 ~> LOWELL STREET LOCOS Name of the Avenue on the east side of El Sereno, just before Alhambra. The number 12 stands for the twelfth letter of the alphabet ~> the letter “L”. BHR ~> BIG HAZARD Name derived from Hazard Park west of Soto Street in the old community of Ramona. The Ramona Gardens projects east of Soto Street on Lancaster Avenue are at the center of their neighborhood. LHTS ~> LINCOLN HEIGHTS Name of the old community on the east side centered around Lincoln Park, also known as Parque De La Raza. EL13 ~> EASTLAKE 13 Name of the Avenue tucked in-between Lincoln Park and the Five Points (Daly Street, Pasadena Avenue and Avenue 26). ESC ~> EAST SIDE CLOVER Name of the Street on the East Side of the L.A. River in the Lincoln Heights community, south of the Five Points and West of Lincoln Park. DTR ~> DOG TOWN Name of the old community next to the L.A. River along North Main Street. The William Mead projects on North Main west of the river is all that remains of the greater neighborhood which was also referred to as Dog Hell. The second Dog Town neighborhood is in Highland Park, south of Franklin High School, centered along Monte Vista Street, in-between Avenue 50 and Avenue 55. NELA13 ~> NORTH EAST L.A. 13 The name reflects on the locality of the neighborhood in regards to the section of Los Angeles, up around Avenue 50 and Figueroa Street. HLP ~> HIGHLAND PARK Name of the park and community in north east Los Angeles, which is centered on York Blvd and Figueroa Street. AVES ~> AVENUES Name derived from the numbered Avenues all along Figueroa Street in north east L.A. There are several neighborhoods for the Avenues. The 43RD AVENUES take their name off 43Rd Avenue which intersects with Figueroa Street, next to the Arroyo Seco canal, and the neighborhood is on both sides of the canal. The 57TH AVENUES are farther north along Figueroa, closer to Highland Park. The CYPRESS AVENUES take their name from Cypress Avenue, which runs north west away from Figueroa, just north of the L.A. River. Their neighborhood extends from Division Street (Little Vietnam) and Drew Street in Glassell Park, north east to Eagle Rock, around Mount Washington (the Flat Top), connecting to Highland Park. CP ~> CYPRESS PARK BOYS Name of the community which is centered on the same named park and running along Cypress Avenue between Figueroa and Division Street. CPBoys Varrio separates the 43RD AVES from the CYP'S AVES. TVR ~> TOONERVILLE Name derived from the old Trolley Line and Rail Roads that connected at the present day Metrolink station on Glendale Blvd and San Fernando Road in Atwater Village. CCPL / CCLS ~> CHEVY CHASE PARK LOCOS Name derived from both the Park and C.C. Drive in north Atwater. CCLS later turned into a clique of Toonerville. FTR ~> FROG TOWN The named derived on account of the large bullfrog population that inhabited the Little River Valley area north east of the Elysian Hills, south of Atwater and west of the L.A. River.
